European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called for maintaining the sanctions imposed on Russia over the war. She made the call on Monday amid member states’ efforts to reach an understanding on extending the sanctions.
After a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kaja Kallas told journalists in New York, ‘Sanctions are one of the main foundations of our steps against Russia’s war.’ Through this, efforts are under way to keep Moscow’s supply of money cut off.
News agency AFP reported this from the United Nations.
Kallas said the aim is to quickly conclude the discussions on extending the sanctions on Russia. The extension will be done quickly right after that.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, she said, ‘We need this stability.’ So the sanctions have to be kept in place for a longer time.
Kallas stressed that there has been no change in the EU’s position on the Russia question. In her words, ‘That is why we are also working on a new sanctions package.’
However, discussions on the matter are still going on, because several member states have demanded that the names of a few individuals be removed from the EU’s blacklist.
