The Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) has demanded that the recruitment notice be published afresh after correcting the educational qualification for the post of ‘Sub-Assistant Engineer (Civil)’ mentioned at serial number 10 of the recently published notice for manpower recruitment at Jahangirnagar University.
The demand was made on Monday (28 September) in a letter to the university’s registrar (acting), signed by Engineer Md Kabir Hossain, convener of the organisation’s interim central committee.
The press release said the published recruitment notice has kept the opportunity for BSc engineering (graduate) degree holders, alongside diploma holders, to apply for the 10th grade post of ‘Sub-Assistant Engineer (Civil)’. IDEB claims this is a direct deviation from the government’s existing laws and gazette notifications.
The organisation said that, by order of the President, according to the Ministry of Public Administration’s memo no. SaMa (Bidhi-2) Padonnoti 27/94-164 (dated 19/11/1994) and the Ministry of Finance’s memo dated 03/12/1994, the 10th grade posts of sub-assistant engineer and equivalent are reserved for holders of the Diploma in Engineering certificate who have passed from the Bangladesh Technical Education Board.
In addition, the organisation also mentioned that according to the Ministry of Finance’s 1978 gazette notification there is a clear obligation to give diploma engineers the uniform designation of sub-assistant engineer in all offices and agencies of the country.
IDEB leaders alleged that such a decision by the university authorities, ignoring government directives, has angered the country’s 8 lakh diploma engineers and 4 lakh students. They demanded that serial number 10 of the notice be corrected immediately and a revised notice be published keeping the opportunity to apply for the post of sub-assistant engineer only for diploma engineers of the Technical Education Board.
