أُعِيْذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَّهَامَّةٍ وَّمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ
Pronunciation: U’izukuma bikalimatillahit tammati min kulli shaitanin wa hammatin wa min kulli ainin lammatin.
Meaning: I place you both in the refuge of the perfect words of Allah from every devil, vermin and evil eye.
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) used to take little ones in his lap, recite various duas and blow on them. Many such duas have been narrated in the books of hadith. The Prophet (pbuh) used to perform ruqyah on Hazrat Hasan and Husain (RA) with the words mentioned above.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, spoke of staying safe from the evil eye and also taught the practice for it. He said, ‘Seek refuge with Allah from the effect of the evil eye. For the effect of the eye is true.’ (Ibn Majah 3508)
The evil eye has also been mentioned in several places in the Holy Quran. Allah the Almighty says, ‘When the disbelievers hear the words of admonition, it is as if they would strike you down with their gaze, and they say, he is but a madman’. (Surah Qalam 51)
Allama Ibn Kathir (RH) said in the tafsir of this verse that it is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA): what is meant by ‘they would strike you down with their gaze’ in this verse of the Quran is ‘they will cast the evil eye on you.’ Without Allah’s protection, they would give effect to their envy and make one a patient. The verse proves that people falling ill under the ill effect of the evil eye is true. (Tafsir Ibn Kathir 4/410)
The practice for staying safe from the evil eye
The Prophet taught a dua for staying safe from the evil eye. It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Sa’id (RA) that once when the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was afflicted with some illness, Jibrail (AS) came and asked, O Muhammad, are you feeling unwell? He said, yes. Then Jibrail (AS) recited this dua: بِاسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيكَ، مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ، مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنِ حَاسِدٍ، اللهُ يَشْفِيكَ بِاسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيكَ.
Pronunciation: Bismillahi arqika min kulli shai’in yu’zika min sharri kulli nafsin aw ainin hasidin, Allahu yashfika bismillahi arqika.
Meaning: In the name of Allah I blow on you; may Allah grant you healing from all things that cause you pain, from the harm of every soul or the evil eye of the envious; in the name of Allah I blow on you. (Muslim 5512). If one recites the dua and blows on the afflicted person repeatedly, the evil eye will gradually pass, Insha Allah. This dua is very beneficial in the case of small children too.
