State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir has called for building more effective coordination among the various United Nations agencies and aligning their programmes more closely with the five-year strategic framework (2026-2031) formulated for Bangladesh’s reform and development. At the same time, he reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to a stronger partnership.

The state minister made the call at a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator ad interim Carol Flore-Smereczniak at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Tuesday. This information was given in a press release of the ministry. At the meeting he said, ‘Bangladesh attaches great importance to its long-standing partnership with the United Nations and is committed to further strengthening cooperation towards shared priorities and national development.’

The state minister highly praised Carol Flore-Smereczniak, who leads the UN Country Team, for her role in advancing Bangladesh’s development priorities. In reply to a question, he highlighted the prime minister’s important engagements during the high-level segment of the just-concluded 81st session of the UN General Assembly. In this context he also mentioned the meeting with the UN secretary-general.

The state minister for foreign affairs stressed the need for more effective coordination among UN agencies and for matching their programmes more closely with Bangladesh’s reform and development framework.

On the Rohingya crisis, Humayun Kabir praised the UN’s humanitarian assistance. He also called for continued efforts to ensure the speedy and sustainable repatriation of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their own land in Myanmar.

He made it clear that dignified repatriation to Myanmar is the only lasting solution to this crisis. Flore-Smereczniak praised the continued cooperation of the Bangladesh government and reiterated that the UN is ready to further deepen its partnership with Bangladesh.

At the meeting, the UN representative praised the government’s consistent cooperation and said the UN Country Team stands ready to work closely with the government in addressing global and regional challenges.
