Farmer Moyez Uddin has found success by cultivating the hybrid Early-45 variety of summer beans in a village of Khansama upazila in the district.
He sees the prospect of profit by cultivating Early-45 hybrid beans in the Kharif-2/2026-27 season under the Sustainable Agricultural Development Project in the Dinajpur region, with the support of the Department of Agricultural Extension.
During a visit to Seat Alokdihi village in Khansama upazila on Wednesday, it was seen that Md Moyez Uddin’s bean field on 22 decimals of land was full of flowers and pods. Tender beans are hanging all over the trellises of the rabi crop cultivated on his land. Farmer Md Moyez Uddin, 55, is spending busy days tending, harvesting and marketing the crop.
Talking to Moyez Uddin, it was learnt that other farmers in the same area have also become interested in summer bean cultivation after seeing his bean farming. Inspired by his success, several more farmers of the area, including farmer Md Kashem Ali, have cultivated beans in the current season. As a result, besides the expansion of summer bean cultivation in the area, interest in growing alternative and profitable vegetables has been created among farmers.
Moyez Uddin said he became interested in summer bean cultivation out of the thought of growing alternative and profitable crops alongside conventional ones. With the advice of the agriculture department and the support of the project, he started cultivating Early-45 hybrid beans on 22 decimals of land. He plans to cultivate this variety of beans on more land in future.
He said he has so far spent around Tk 28,000 to Tk 30,000 on cultivating beans on 22 decimals of land. If the weather remains favourable, he hopes to sell beans worth around Tk 75,000 to Tk 80,000 if the current yield continues.
Md Mominul Bin Amin, sub-assistant agriculture officer of Khansama upazila, said, ‘Farmer Moyez Uddin has been given advice on regular care of the bean field and on disease and pest management. As the Early-45 hybrid variety is suitable for cultivation in summer, an opportunity has been created for the farmer to get a good yield. Farmers are being given regular advice at the field level on cultivating all kinds of vegetables, including beans, so that they can follow modern methods and achieve higher production and profit at lower cost in summer vegetable cultivation.’
Khansama Upazila Agriculture Officer Yasmin Akter told BSS, ‘Crops can be diversified according to climate and season, and more profitable crops can be produced on the same land. To realise the goal of increasing farmers’ income through the use of modern agricultural methods, the agriculture department has been providing support to farmers in crop production. Under various projects, farmers are being encouraged about new technologies and improved varieties. Initiatives such as the cultivation of the improved summer variety Early-45 beans are bringing diversity to agriculture and also playing a role in increasing the supply of vegetables in the local market.’
Md Afzal Hossain, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Dinajpur, told BSS that the agriculture department has supplied seeds for cultivating the improved vegetable variety Early-45 beans in the district’s 13 upazilas this time. Last year, farmers made higher profits by cultivating, on an experimental basis, the Early-45 variety of beans developed by the agriculture department.
He said that in this year’s rabi season, some farmers in all upazilas of the district have cultivated the early Early-45 variety of beans. Beans of this variety are very tasty to eat and are in demand among buyers in the market. Enquiries have found that the production and yield of this variety of beans have been very good. He hopes that there is a possibility of cultivation of this variety of beans increasing further in the days to come.
