The administration has removed a structure for catching fish illegally by building a permanent dam on the Kumar river. The drive was conducted on Friday (9 October) afternoon in that part of the river at Balugram Dakshinpara village in Maheshkhali union of Kashiani upazila in Gopalganj.
The drive was led by Kashiani Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Papia Sultana Liza. Upazila Fisheries Officer (additional charge) Aslam Hossain Sheikh provided overall cooperation.
The illegal structure for catching fish by damming the river permanently was removed during the drive. Because of such structures, besides the river’s normal water flow being disrupted, obstacles may also be created to the movement and breeding of fish.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) Papia Sultana Liza said such drives by the administration would continue in order to maintain the river’s normal flow and to stop fishing in the river by illegally building dams. Necessary legal action would be taken against those who defy the law, in the public interest and to protect the environment.
Upazila Fisheries Officer (additional charge) Aslam Hossain Sheikh said it is essential to stop fishing by illegally building dams; it is needed to protect the fisheries resources of rivers and open water bodies and to ensure the normal movement and breeding of fish. The office concerned will provide the necessary cooperation to continue drives against such illegal activities in order to conserve fisheries resources.
