Bangladesh national football team midfielder Fahamedul Islam has found a new club. The 20-year-old footballer has signed for Sestri Levante, who play in the fourth tier of Italian league football. The Italian club confirmed his signing in an announcement on Saturday. However, details of the financial terms and the length of the contract were not disclosed.
Fahamedul previously played for another Italian side, Olbia Calcio. He scored one goal in 28 matches there over about a season and a half. His contract with the club expired last June, and the Bangladesh midfielder had been looking for a new home since then.
Sestri Levante currently play in the fourth tier of Italian professional football. The side competed in the third tier from 2023 to 2025, but dropped down to the fourth tier after being relegated at the end of the 2024-25 season.
Fahamedul grew up as a footballer in Italy itself. He played at age-group level for Spezia and Sampdoria. The Bangladeshi footballer later also took the field in Italy’s Serie D in the shirts of Ligorna, Livorno and Olbia.
Fahamedul completed the legal formalities required to play for Bangladesh in 2025. He made his national team debut on 4 June that year in a friendly against Bhutan, a match Bangladesh won 2-0.
Fahamedul has played nine matches for the national team so far. He took part in all three of Bangladesh’s matches in the recently concluded FIFA ASEAN Cup. However, the young midfielder is yet to score in the national team shirt.
Meanwhile, his new club Sestri Levante are not in a very good position in Italy’s fourth-tier league. The side are 14th in the table with seven points from six matches. They will face Celle Varazze in the seventh round today; the match is scheduled to start at 7:00pm Bangladesh time.
It is hoped that, after joining the new club, Fahamedul will improve the team’s position with his performances and also get the chance to play a more important role in the national team.
