After a colourful 22-year run, the curtain is set to fall on Bollywood’s most talked-about and controversial chat show, ‘Koffee with Karan’. Filmmaker and host Karan Johar is going to bid farewell to the popular show for good with its ninth season. And the final season opens with a surprise: Bollywood’s ‘Bhaijaan’ Salman Khan is coming before the audience.
Karan himself confirmed the news recently by sharing an attractive promo on Instagram, which has already created real excitement among fans on social media.
In the promo video, Salman Khan can be heard saying, ‘So I’m coming to do Koffee with Karan.’ In the caption, Karan Johar wrote, ‘For the very last time… a cup of coffee with Bhaijaan.’
This farewell season of the show will start streaming on JioHotstar from 14 October. It is expected that Salman Khan’s presence in the first episode will make the show lively.
Answering a question in an interview with Variety on why he took such a tough decision as ending the show, Karan said that in the next phase of his life he wants to focus fully on his own filmmaking and storytelling. Noting that ‘Koffee with Karan’ has been a big part of his identity for 22 years, he said he still cannot believe that 22 years have passed and this is going to be his ninth season. Announcing with a heavy heart that this season will be his last, Karan further said he wants to devote the next decade of his life to directing more films and telling many more stories.
The filmmaker described saying goodbye to the coffee couch, which for years had become synonymous with stars’ candid conversations, honesty and various controversies, as a very emotional and personal decision. He expressed hope that the legacy of the love people gave him through the show will live on in the same way in fans’ hearts.
Notably, ‘Koffee with Karan’ began its journey in 2004 on the Star World channel. The guests on the first episode were Bollywood King Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. In the first season, Amitabh Bachchan appeared with his son Abhishek Bachchan, and Aishwarya Rai came along with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. After six successful seasons on Star World until 2019, the show moved to the OTT platform Hotstar.
