National Youth Day has been observed in Jhalakathi with the theme ‘Skilled youth will build the country, Bangladesh for all’.
To mark the day, the district administration and the Department of Youth Development organised a colourful rally and a discussion meeting on Sunday morning. Awards were handed to successful self-employed people and youth organisers, and youth loan cheques were also distributed.
The rally started in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office at 10:30am. After going round the town’s main roads, it ended at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room, where the discussion meeting was held.
Deputy Commissioner Md Momin Uddin was the chief guest at the meeting. Special guests were district council administrator Advocate Md Shahadat Hossain, Civil Surgeon Dr Mohammad Humayun Kabir and Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) SM Bayezid Ibne Akbar.
Department of Youth Development deputy director Md Alauddin presided over the meeting. The department’s assistant director Md Delwar Hossain and deputy coordinator Mohammad Abdullah Al Amin were among those present.
Speakers said the role of the youth is extremely important in the country’s development and economic progress. Employment opportunities must be created for young people through skills development. Instead of chasing jobs, they must take training and come forward for self-employment. The youth must be kept away from drugs, terrorism and crime and engaged in nation-building. In this regard, they said, the Department of Youth Development’s training and loan programmes are helping young people become self-reliant.
After the meeting, successful self-employed Sedratul Islam was given a youth loan cheque of Tk 1 lakh 5 thousand and Iti Akter one of Tk 1 lakh. Along with the handover of cheques totalling Tk 2.5 lakh, 11 people were given crests as awards.
