Nine businesses and an autorickshaw were burnt to ashes in a devastating fire in the Kolabagan area of Khagrachhari town. The damage is initially estimated at a crore taka.
The fire broke out around 3am in the early hours after Thursday (5 November). Firefighters had to battle for nearly three hours to bring it under control.
Mukul Kumar Nath, station officer of Khagrachhari Fire Service and Civil Defence Station, said firefighters went to the scene after being informed towards dawn and began work to put out the fire.
Eyewitnesses said local residents, army personnel and police also joined the fire service in putting out the blaze.
According to Mukul Kumar Nath, the fire spread quickly because the structures were made of wood and tin. It was brought under control after a long effort, but by then nine businesses, including wood shops and furniture factories, and an autorickshaw had already burnt.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage could not be confirmed immediately.
