Khulna’s Jahangir murder convict on death row arrested in Chattogram after 17 years on the run

Md Jasim (50), a fugitive sentenced to death in the sensational Jahangir murder case in Khulna, has been arrested after 17 years.
A joint team of SRB-6 and SRB-7 caught him in the Salimpur area under Sitakunda police station in Chattogram on Thursday night. The information was given in a press release from SRB Khulna on Friday.
Jasim is the son of Hossain Ali of the Haji Tamizuddin Road By-lane area under Sonadanga police station in Khulna city. In the murder case, the court sentenced him to death along with a fine of Tk 50 thousand.
According to the SRB press release, in 2009 Jasim was a rickshaw puller by profession and lived as a tenant in the house of the victim, Jahangir Hossain.
Jasim took Tk 800 saying he would recover a mobile phone lost by a shopkeeper next to Jahangir’s house. But as he returned neither the phone nor the money, a local arbitration meeting was held on the morning of 19 May the same year.
At the arbitration, Jasim’s theft was proved. He was told to return the phone and the money, and Jahangir told him to leave the house.
Angered at Jahangir over the arbitration, Jasim stabbed him with a knife that same afternoon and fled. Locals rescued Jahangir and took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
After the incident, the victim’s elder brother Alamgir Hossain filed a murder case with Sonadanga police station.
SRB sources said the arrested convict has been handed over to Hathazari police station in Chattogram district for further legal action.

According to a Khobor Sangjog report of September 2026, SRB-8 arrested Joynal Sardar, a fugitive sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case, from the Sonadanga area of Khulna city on the night of 26 September, 27 years later.
