Film actress Pori Moni went to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court in Dhaka on Thursday (5 November), a day after her bail was cancelled and an arrest warrant was ordered. She is reportedly set to surrender and seek bail in the case of assault, vandalism and intimidation filed by businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmud.
Wednesday (4 November) had been set for taking testimony in the case. Pori Moni could not attend court that day due to illness. Her lawyer Nilanjana Rifat Suravi applied for more time, saying she could not appear because of an allergy-related illness.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Abul Kalam Mohammad Sohel opposed the application. He alleged that Pori Moni was deliberately staying away from court and repeatedly seeking time. Acting Judge Mahfuzur Rahman of Dhaka’s Judicial Magistrate Court-1 then rejected the time petition, cancelled Pori Moni’s bail and ordered an arrest warrant against her. The next date for testimony was set for 23 December.
On Wednesday itself, Pori Moni’s lawyer Nilanjana Rifat Suravi said her client would surrender to the court on Thursday and seek bail. She also expressed optimism about getting bail.
Businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmud filed the case on 6 July 2022, naming three people including Pori Moni as accused. The case statement alleges that during an altercation at a Dhaka boat club that day, Pori Moni threw a serving glass and a mobile phone at him. Nasir claims he was injured.
