US technology giant Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has expressed interest in opening an office in the capital Dhaka, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed has said.
She said this at a press conference organised at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York on Tuesday, local time.
Shama Obaed said, ‘We had a very fruitful meeting with Meta today. The prime minister was supposed to be present there, but he could not be there due to shortage of time.’
The state minister said the matter of opening Meta’s office in Dhaka was discussed at the meeting and the company is very interested in this regard. According to her, as there are more Facebook users in Bangladesh than even in India, Meta will make its focal point in Dhaka itself. The Cyber Security Act (CSA) was also talked about at the meeting. She also said Meta will cooperate in expanding the country’s e-commerce and online business.
The press conference was organised to present the activities of the first day of the New York visit, including Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s participation in the opening ceremony of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
