Rohit Sharma has finally broken a record of Sachin Tendulkar that had stood intact for 22 long years. Coming towards the end of his career, the Indian star made new history by reaching the fastest 10,000 runs as an opener in ODIs, leaving behind the legend from his own country.
Rohit set the record in the third ODI against West Indies. He needed just 2 runs to reach the milestone. After coming to the crease, he opened his account by taking 2 runs off Jayden Seales on the fourth ball he faced, and with that completed 10,000 runs as an opener.
Rohit had to play 202 innings for this. Sachin had taken 214 innings, a feat he achieved in 2004.
Rohit is only the fourth batter to score 10,000 runs as an opener in ODIs. Before him, besides Sachin, West Indies’ Chris Gayle and Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya had this feat. Gayle took 268 innings and Jayasuriya 303 innings.
Rohit set a new record in the previous match too. The 39-year-old batter reached the milestone of 12,000 runs in ODIs. In the third ODI he played an innings of 92 off 85 balls, narrowly missing out on a century.
