An attempt was made in Bogura to snatch away a detained pickpocket by attacking a police patrol deployed for Durga Puja security. A sub-inspector (ASI) of police was injured. Additional police later went to the spot, brought the situation under control and arrested Ratan Byapari, an accused in 28 cases, taking him to the police station.
The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Dattabari autorickshaw stand in the North Chelopara area of the town.
Ratan Byapari, 29, who was arrested, has his home in the North Chelopara area itself. According to police information, there are 28 cases against him at various police stations across the country on charges including theft, drugs and preparation for robbery, and among these there are three arrest warrants at Bogura Sadar police station.
Describing the incident, Sadar police station officer-in-charge (OC) Ibrahim Ali said that on Tuesday afternoon, while a patrol was on duty at the Dattabari autorickshaw stand, four or five people were preparing for criminal activity. When police caught Ratan from among them, the people with him and relatives from the surrounding area set upon the police and tried to snatch him away; ASI Ujjal was injured in this.
The OC also said that additional police later went to the spot, brought the situation under control, arrested Ratan and took him to the police station. The injured ASI Ujjal is being treated at Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
