Jawad Abrar is now the owner of the fastest fifty in Bangladesh’s first-class cricket. The young opener reached fifty off just 22 balls. He went very close to a century but did not touch three figures; he stopped at 91.
Until now the record belonged to Ziaur Rahman. He had made a fifty off 24 balls in the National Cricket League of the 2014-15 season. Eleven years on, Jawad has left that feat behind.
He batted explosively in Barishal’s second innings against Rajshahi division in the National Cricket League on Tuesday. His innings of 91 off 94 balls was made up of nine fours and four sixes. Even after reaching his quick fifty, the batsman, who has played for Bangladesh’s under-19 side, could not carry the innings on to a century.
Alongside scoring quickly, Jawad was aggressive through much of the innings, and his 91 runs have helped Barishal move ahead in the second innings. At the end of the third day the side’s total was 249 for 5, with the lead standing at 21 runs.
