Naim Ahmed spent three straight days at the crease — batting 267 balls in 462 minutes to compile a superb unbeaten innings of 202. But after turning his first century into a double hundred, the Rajshahi Division batter could not stay on the field for long once his side took to fielding. Feeling unwell, he was taken off the field and doctors later examined him at the stadium itself. The team has said there is nothing worrying.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during the third day’s play of the third round of the 28th National Cricket League (NCL) at the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium. Riding on Naim’s unbeaten double century against Barishal Division, Rajshahi declared their first innings on 457.
This is the highest individual innings by any batter at the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium in the National League. Rajshahi captain Pritam Kumar declared the innings as soon as the 21-year-old left-handed batter completed his double century. Naim then went out to field but could not stay on for more than an over or two; feeling unwell, he was taken back to the dressing room, where doctors examined him and advised rest.
Rajshahi Division team manager Touhid Tarek said in the evening, ‘Naim has been batting for three days. After an over or two in the field he was feeling unwell. That is why he was taken off the field. Doctors saw him at the stadium itself. He is fine now.’
Saying there was no cause for concern, Touhid Tarek added, ‘It is nothing serious. He had a bit of a fever. He felt nauseous. The doctors measured his temperature and said there is nothing worrying. He is fine now. He has gone from the stadium to the hotel with the team. He will be all right with some rest.’
The innings was built in stages. Coming out to bat against Barishal on Sunday, Naim was unbeaten on 18 at the close of play; by the end of the second day on Monday his score stood at 176, and today, on the third day, he completed his double century and remained unbeaten on 202. He batted for 22 minutes on the first day, 388 minutes on the second and 52 minutes on the third — 462 minutes at the crease across the three days in all.
In age-group cricket Naim played for Chapainawabganj district in the under-14, under-16 and under-18 teams. He later enrolled at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan (BKSP). Having made his National Cricket League debut last year, the young batter announced his ability with a double century in only his second season.
