Five more people have died of dengue, carried by the Aedes mosquito, in the country in the past 24 hours, and 1,366 others have been newly admitted to hospital. With this, the number of deaths from the disease this year has reached 357. The deterioration of the dengue situation in the country is continuing.

This information was given today, Tuesday, in the Directorate General of Health Services’ updated bulletin on dengue. The bulletin presented the count for the 24 hours from 8:00am yesterday, Monday, to 8:00am today.

According to the directorate’s information, of those who died in this period two were from Barishal division, two were in hospital in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) area and one was undergoing treatment in Rangpur.

Among the newly admitted patients, 110 are in the Dhaka South City Corporation area and 113 in the Dhaka North City Corporation area. Outside Dhaka’s two city corporations, 1,143 have been admitted to various hospitals.

In the division-wise count, the highest number of patients outside Dhaka were admitted in Barishal — 191. In addition, 141 were admitted to hospital in Khulna, 128 in Rajshahi, 105 in Chattogram, 80 in Mymensingh, 72 in Rangpur and 11 in Sylhet.

Month-wise statistics show that two people each died of dengue in January and February this year and one died in May. After that, 13 died in June, 36 in July, 43 in August and 148 in September. So far in October, 112 have died.

According to the directorate’s count, from 1 January to today 115,617 people have been admitted to hospital after contracting dengue, of whom 109,316 have recovered and been released.

Of those who have died of dengue this year, 53.1 per cent are women and 46.9 per cent men. On the other hand, among the patients admitted to hospital, 37.9 per cent are women and 62.1 per cent men.

The numbers

How fast this year’s trend has risen can be understood by comparing it with the count of just two weeks ago. Citing the Directorate General of Health Services’ daily bulletin, bdnews24.com reported on 5 October 2026 that up to that day dengue deaths for the year stood at 271 and 88,360 people had been admitted to hospital.

A comparison with the previous two years is also in the same report: in 2025 dengue deaths crossed 400 and the number of detected patients stood at about 102,000 — bdnews24.com provided this information on 5 October 2026.

At a glance

The worst year for dengue in the country was 2023; that year 321,179 people were admitted to hospital and 1,705 died — bdnews24.com provided this information on 5 October 2026.
