Police have recovered the hanging body of Farzana Islam, a student of the Pharmacy Department at Cumilla University (CoU), from her husband’s home in Fatullah, Narayanganj. The body was recovered from the house in the Signboard area under Fatullah Police Station at around 11pm on Saturday.
After the incident, police took Farzana’s husband, Nazmul Islam, into custody for questioning. Nazmul was also a student of the same department at Cumilla University. Fatullah Police Station sub-inspector Gazi Sumon Mahtab confirmed the matter on Sunday.
Sub-inspector Gazi Sumon Mahtab said, ‘We went to the scene and found her hanging. Her husband has been taken into custody for questioning over the incident. Initially, it appears to be a suicide. However, nothing can be said with certainty about the actual cause of death until the post-mortem report is received.’
The family alleges that Farzana’s husband had subjected her to physical and mental abuse ever since their marriage. Last December, after being beaten, she left her husband’s home for her father’s house and filed a case of violence against women. Later, members of Nazmul’s family requested that the case be withdrawn, assuring that she would not be abused in future. Following a settlement between the two families, steps were taken to withdraw the case. The family claims that Farzana was murdered in a planned manner as soon as the withdrawal of the case was confirmed.
Farzana’s brother Ariful Islam said, ‘She was married about three years ago to Nazmul Islam, a senior student of the same department. Ever since the marriage, Farzana was abused over various issues.’ He also claimed that Tk 5 to 7 lakh had been taken from Farzana’s family at different times.
Ariful further said, ‘Nazmul was unemployed at first. After he got a job, his demands for money began to grow. At one stage, along with pressure for money, the abuse of Farzana also continued.’
