Today, 19 September, is the 55th birthday of Salman Shah, Dhallywood’s short-lived hero. The ‘dream hero’ of Bangla cinema was born on this day in 1971 at Zakiganj in Sylhet. Although his life stopped at the age of only 25, his place in the hearts of the audience remains just as intact even after three decades.
Salman Shah departed for the land of no return on 6 September 1996. Nearly three decades have passed since then. In this time, many changes have come to cinema and many new heroes have arrived. Yet Salman Shah’s popularity has not ebbed in the slightest; rather, the audience’s love for him has grown deeper with time.
Salman Shah acted in 27 films in a film career of only four years. He made his debut on the big screen in 1993 with ‘Keyamat Theke Keyamat’. He won the hearts of the audience with his very first film. Then, acting in one film after another, he became one of the most popular heroes of Dhaka cinema within a short time.
Not only his acting, but his clothes, hairstyle, manner of speaking and personality also had a huge influence on the youth of that time. Many who later came to be heroes have mentioned him as their inspiration. The films he acted in and his characters are still equally familiar to the audience.
The full extent of his influence cannot be understood if Salman Shah is seen merely as a popular hero. To the audience of Bangla cinema he is still the name of an emotion. His untimely death created a void in the hearts of his fans, and the work he left behind has kept him ever memorable.
The mark of acting and personality he left in such a short time is not one to be erased. That mark is bright even so many years after his departure. Apart from his birthday or death anniversary, fans and admirers reminisce about him on social media throughout the year.
Alongside films, this much-talked-about hero of the nineties also acted in television dramas and earned praise there too. The love he earned in an acting journey of just a few years in his short life still flows today across generations.
Although many faces have come to the screen with time, ‘dream hero’ Salman Shah is still unique in his own place. On his birthday, his countless fans and admirers are remembering this beloved hero with respect and love.
