Several workers were lifting rods to the top of an under-construction building. Suddenly, when the bundle of rods came into contact with the electric line of an AC outside the building, two workers were electrocuted and died instantly.
The accident occurred at the construction work of Samad Plaza in front of Puran Thana Islami Market in Kishoreganj district town at around 12:00 noon on Monday.
The deceased are Afazul, 34, son of Golap Mia of Jinarail village in Chouddashata union of Kishoreganj Sadar upazila, and Sabbir, 25, of Rampur union in Hossainpur upazila.
Speaking to eyewitnesses and locals, it was learnt that several workers were doing construction work at Samad Plaza in the Puran Thana area of the town at noon. Rods were then being pulled up to the upper part of the building. At one stage, the two workers were electrocuted when the bundle of rods came into contact with the AC line.
After the incident, people nearby tried to rescue them. When police and the Fire Service were informed, Fire Service members came and rescued the two workers, but by then they had died.
Kishoreganj Fire Service official Murshed told BSS that after visiting the spot it is initially assumed that the two workers were electrocuted as the iron rods used in the construction work came into contact with the electric connection of an AC outside the building. However, the specific cause of the accident can be confirmed only after investigation.
Local resident Md Ruhul Amin said the building’s electrical connections and the risky places around it should have been made safe before the construction work began. Two workers lost their lives together because of a little carelessness.
Ensuring safety measures in construction work is essential to avoid such accidents in the future.
Mohammad Abul Kalam Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station, told BSS that police were sent to the spot as soon as the news was received.
The matter is being investigated. If a written complaint is received, necessary legal action will be taken subject to investigation. The bodies have been recovered and sent to Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital.
