The National Citizen Party (NCP) will hold a mass protest at Shahbagh today, Friday, with a four-point demand including the resignation of the home minister and the energy minister. The party’s Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units are organising it, and the programme is due to begin at 3:30pm in front of the National Museum.
NCP convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam will be the chief guest, and the party’s member secretary Akhtar Hossain the main speaker. Top central leaders, including members of the political council, will also speak.
The first demand is that the home minister and energy minister resign, taking responsibility for their failures. The second calls for dissolving the one-party constitution amendment committee and forming a constitution reform council based on the people’s verdict in the referendum.
The party has also demanded the repeal of all laws that go against human rights and freedom of speech, and that the proposed amendment to the Cyber Security Act not be passed. The fourth demand is that the trial of the July massacre be completed and the verdict executed immediately.
The NCP said the mass protest aims to build public opinion in favour of these demands and to get the government to meet them.
Around 10:30pm yesterday, Thursday, NCP member secretary and MP Akhtar Hossain inspected preparations at the rally venue in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh. He was accompanied by joint member secretary Nizam Uddin, Dhaka divisional organising secretary Saifullah Haider and other central leaders.
After the inspection, they called on people from all walks of life across the country to join the mass protest.
