Rosario Central put five past Independiente Rivadavia on home soil, with Argentine star Ángel Di María scoring twice. The emphatic 5-0 win lifted the side to the top of the Zone B table in Argentina’s Liga Profesional and further strengthened Rosario’s position in the title race.
In Sunday night’s match at the Gigante de Arroyito stadium, the hosts were in control from the opening whistle. World Cup winner Di María put his side ahead in the first half, converting a penalty.
Shortly before half-time, Rivadavia’s Alex Arce was shown a red card for a foul on Gastón Ávila. As a result, the visitors had to play the rest of the match with 10 men, and that is where the game turned.
After the break, Di María found the net for a second time in the 57th minute. Rosario then kept the opposition defence busy with relentless attacks. The other three goals came from Jaminton Campaz, Enzo Copetti and Marco Ruben.
With this win, Rosario Central have secured an important place in the league table. The side have won six of their 12 matches, drawn four and lost two, and now have 22 points.
Building on last season’s success, securing a place in next season’s Copa Libertadores is one of Rosario’s main goals. This win could play a big part in helping them pull ahead of their rivals in the title race.
Rosario Central’s next opponents are Atlético Tucumán, with the match to be played at the Monumental José Fierro stadium. Independiente Rivadavia will face Tigre at home in their next match.
