US President Donald Trump has said that both the Iran war and the Russia-Ukraine war could be settled soon. Speaking at an election rally in Syracuse, New York, on Friday, he said he hoped the two wars would either be resolved through negotiations or end with a victory for the United States.
On ending the Iran war, Trump said, ‘One way or another, it will be resolved very quickly.’
He also issued a stern warning to Tehran. In his words, Iran must either accept everything from the United States or the country will cease to exist.
Trump claimed that the process of resolving both conflicts is moving fast. But his remarks gave no details on what terms, how or exactly when the two wars might end.
Warning over Iran’s existence
Trump’s remarks on Iran carried a stern warning. He said, ‘One way or the other, the Iran war will end very quickly. Either they give us everything, or they will no longer exist.’
The US president did not, however, explain at the rally exactly which terms Iran would have to accept by ‘everything’. Nor did his remarks make clear any specific timeline for ending the war or the terms of a possible deal.
Optimism over resolving both conflicts
Alongside Iran, the Russia-Ukraine war also featured prominently in Trump’s remarks. He claimed that the process of settling both conflicts is moving ‘rapidly’. According to him, he wants to bring both wars to an end, whether the solution comes through negotiations or through military victory.
Despite this optimism, however, nothing in Trump’s remarks indicated that any final agreement has been reached on ending the two wars. For that reason, his comments are being seen as an expectation and a political claim about the end of the wars.
Anger at not getting Nobel Peace Prize
Displeasure at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize was another theme of Trump’s remarks at the Syracuse rally. He criticised the decision to award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist and former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay. Trump claimed that, as president of the United States, the prize should have been given to him.
Highlighting his own role in ending the wars in Iran and Ukraine, Trump claimed in his remarks that he has made an important contribution to resolving international conflicts. Yet even after his latest comments on the two wars, it remains uncertain on what terms and by when the conflicts will end. Source: Al Jazeera
