Garment worker killed as septic tank of under-construction building explodes in Gazipur

A young man named Sakib has died after the septic tank of an under-construction building exploded in Naojor area of Gazipur city. Two others were reportedly injured. Sakib was from Bauphal upazila in Patuakhali.
The explosion took place this morning (Friday, 30 October).
Rajib Hossain, warehouse inspector of Gazipur Chourasta Modern Fire Service, said most of the construction work on the three-storey building in Naojor had been completed. Two rooms built over the septic tank on the ground floor were rented out to garment workers, and Sakib was among several garment workers living there.
Sakib died on the spot when the tank suddenly exploded in the morning. The blast also damaged the doors and windows of the room. The body was later handed over to Basan Police Station. Although two others were reported injured, the official could not give details about them.
Mohammad Harun Or Rashid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Basan Police Station under Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said police were sent to the scene as soon as they got the news.
District angle
According to a Risingbd report of 23 October, a couple and their daughter died earlier this month after being burned in an explosion of gas that had accumulated from a leaking cooking gas cylinder pipe in Tongi, Gazipur city.
In Sreepur in the same district, two construction workers died after going down into the septic tank of an under-construction building on 20 December 2023, Risingbd reported that day.
