Police have recovered the body of 13-year-old Apratim, the only child of the couple Dr Nahida Begum, associate professor of the Bangla department of Cumilla University, and KM Firoz Shahriar. He had gone missing after going out with his mother’s iPhone to take photographs with friends. A day after he went missing, his body was recovered on Saturday (19 September) from a jungle on the south side of Dakshin Mor in the Kotbari area of Cumilla.
Apratim was a class seven student of Border Guard Public School. Police said there are marks of serious injury on his head.
Earlier, at around 3:30pm on Friday (18 September), Apratim went out of his home in the Kotbari area of ward no. 24 under Sadar Dakshin Police Station with his mother’s iPhone to take photographs with friends. He did not return home after that. Failing to trace him after searching in different places, his father KM Firoz Shahriar filed a general diary (GD) with Sadar Dakshin Police Station that very day.
Since he went missing, police, alongside relatives, had been active in trying to rescue him. Police were reviewing his last location and CCTV footage of the areas around Cumilla University.
Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station, said, ‘Apratim’s body was found in the jungle on the south side of Dakshin Mor. There are marks of serious injury on his head. The incident is being investigated.’
As the news of Apratim’s death spread, a pall of gloom descended on the family and the area. Police are looking into how he died and who are involved in it.
