Police have arrested a young man named Md Rakibul Hasan, 22, in Faridganj of Chandpur on charges of carrying out cyberattacks on behalf of Chhatra League, an organisation whose activities are banned, and of hacking social media accounts and spreading obscene and distasteful content. When he was shown arrested in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act and sent to court on Sunday, the judge ordered that he be sent to jail.
Rakibul Hasan is the son of Shipon Tapadar of Tapadar Bari in Kharkhadia of Balithuba Paschim union in Faridganj upazila.
According to police and sources concerned, it is alleged that after the 2024 mass uprising, Rakibul, while staying in Qatar, used to carry out cyberattacks on the social media accounts of various individuals on behalf of the activity-banned Chhatra League. It is also alleged that after hacking and taking control of the Facebook accounts of political and social personalities, government and private officials and media workers, attempts were made to defame them by publishing obscene statements and distasteful pictures from those accounts.
Sources concerned said several victims have filed general diaries (GD) with the police station over the incident.
Police said Rakibul recently returned to the country secretly after staying abroad for a long time. On receiving information about his whereabouts from locals, a team of Faridganj Police Station conducted a drive on Saturday (3 October) and detained him.
He was later shown arrested as a suspected accused found in the investigation of Faridganj Police Station case number 59, dated 28 September 2026, and GR number 454. The case was filed under sections 8, 9, 10 and 12 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009.
Confirming the matter, Faridganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Ershad Ullah said police have detained Rakibul Hasan, a member of the activity-banned organisation. He was later shown arrested in the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act and sent to the Chandpur court on Sunday, and the court ordered that he be sent to jail.
