Although the number of dengue patients is comparatively low, Aedes mosquito larvae are being found at up to 60 to 70 percent in various areas, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton has said.
He gave this information after inaugurating a dengue larvae destruction drive and awareness workshop at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in the capital’s Agargaon on Tuesday (22 September).
The administrator said larvae are being found more in government offices and courts, abandoned buildings and places where there is little movement of people. Ten DNCC magistrates are working to conduct drives at these places. When larvae are found, fines are being imposed besides destroying them.
He said two workers have already been dismissed on charges of negligence in mosquito control activities. In addition, mosquito insecticide is being tested in the laboratory before use. He said a database is also being built by collecting information on dengue patients every day from the hospitals under the DNCC.
