Although early winter vegetables have arrived in the capital’s markets, buyers are having to pay a little more for them. Today, Friday, both the demand for and the price of fish are somewhat higher than on other days of the week; no fish is available for less than Tk 200. Pangas used to be cheap, but today it is above Tk 200.
This was the picture seen on a visit to the capital’s markets today (Friday).
Among winter vegetables in the market, beans were seen selling at Tk 150 a kg, radish at Tk 70 a kg and cauliflower at Tk 70 apiece. Most common vegetables, including brinjal, bitter gourd, yardlong beans, okra, pointed gourd and teasel gourd, cost Tk 70 to Tk 120 a kg. Cucumber is available at a comparatively lower price of Tk 50 to Tk 60; however, local cucumber costs Tk 80 to Tk 100 a kg.
Beans, an early winter vegetable, cost Tk 150 a kg. And the cheapest among these is papaya, at Tk 30 a kg.
Amid the high vegetable prices, the only relief has come in green chillies. Green chillies, which had hit Tk 200 a kg a few weeks ago, are now selling at Tk 120 to Tk 140 depending on quality as supply has increased.
The list of the costliest vegetables includes round brinjal (Tk 120), long brinjal (Tk 100) and tomato (Tk 120 to Tk 140 a kg). Yardlong beans, ridge gourd and bitter gourd are available at Tk 80 a kg. Taro corms are selling at Tk 80, while bottle gourd costs Tk 40 to Tk 60 apiece.
There is not much change in prices in the chicken market either. In the capital’s markets, broiler chicken is selling at Tk 180 a kg and Sonali chicken at Tk 310. The price of eggs, however, has fallen by Tk 10 a dozen compared to before; a dozen now costs Tk 140 and four eggs Tk 50.
Egg sellers said farm chicken eggs are now being sold at Tk 140 a dozen.
The price of beef has not changed; it is seen selling at Tk 800 a kg as before.
Broiler chicken sellers said the price of broiler has stayed between Tk 180 and Tk 200 for the past several weeks. If it falls by Tk 10 one week, it rises by Tk 10 again another week; one way or another the price stays around Tk 200. The price of Sonali chicken stays between Tk 310 and Tk 320, and today they are selling it at Tk 310 a kg.
The picture is the same in the fish market. Per kg, tilapia costs Tk 250 to Tk 260, pangas Tk 220 to Tk 230, rui-katla Tk 380 to Tk 420 and shrimp Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,300. Large rui is selling at Tk 450 to Tk 500, pabda at Tk 350 to Tk 400 and tengra at Tk 700. Besides, bhetki is available at Tk 400 to Tk 550, mrigel at Tk 250 to Tk 300, baim at Tk 600 to Tk 800, local koi at Tk 700 to Tk 800, farmed koi at Tk 300, poa at Tk 260 and shol at Tk 700. Farmed shing costs Tk 300 to Tk 450 depending on size, while medium-sized rui can be bought at Tk 300 to Tk 350. Buying rupchanda, shol and river bele fish will cost more than a thousand taka. However, the price also depends on the size of the fish and whether it is alive or dead. Prices may vary by Tk 10 to Tk 20 a kg from market to market.
