The decision to build an 81-kilometre elevated chord line from Dhaka and Shyampur to Cumilla has been finalised, said Dr Zahed Ur Rahman, the Prime Minister’s adviser on information and broadcasting. He said this at a press conference called at the Secretariat on Tuesday on the progress of various government activities.
According to the adviser, the entire 81-kilometre stretch of the proposed railway from Dhaka to Cumilla will be elevated. The final decision on the matter has come from the highest level.
He said that once this new straight and shorter railway line (chord line) is built, the rail distance between Dhaka and Chattogram will be reduced by nearly 80 kilometres. It is also expected to save one and a half to two hours of travel time between the two cities.
The adviser also said that as the railway will be fully elevated, around 322 acres of land will be saved. The initial cost of the project has been estimated at Tk 83,901 crore.
According to the information he provided, the preliminary plan states that the project will take four years to implement after land acquisition is completed.
