Lena Dunham, creator of the popular television series ‘Girls’ and a renowned writer and actress, and her husband Luis Felber have welcomed their first daughter through surrogacy, that is, the method of having another woman carry the pregnancy. In an article published in ‘Vogue’ magazine on Wednesday, describing the boundless joy of motherhood and her long struggle, Dunham wrote that she is now thrilled and overwhelmed by a new, unearthly joy.
Lena Dunham, 40, has for many years spoken openly in public about infertility, chronic physical illness and her dream of motherhood. At the age of just 31, she had to have her uterus removed (hysterectomy) because of physical complications, which dealt a deep blow to her dream of becoming a mother naturally.
In Vogue, she described in emotional language the experience of first getting to know the surrogate mother. She said she has a reputation for quickly striking up friendships with strangers at airports or in a veterinarian’s chamber. But moving so quickly from a chat over coffee towards a gynaecological procedure – such a thing had never happened in her life before.
Describing the moment of the child’s birth, Dunham said her daughter came into the world 13 days after the due date had passed, amid a solar eclipse and a meteor shower. She wrote that she had not known the woman at whose feet she sat on the hospital bed even just a year earlier. After a long wait, on hearing the newborn’s first cry, she lowered her eyes and saw her daughter’s face for the first time. Conveying that feeling, she wrote that, just like herself, the new arrival too seemed to be trying to take a breath for the first time; seeing the light and shadow around her through blurry eyes, the baby was blinking rapidly.
Dunham has long been writing about the harrowing experience of suffering from endometriosis and its negative impact on building a family life. In her memoir ‘Famesick’, published in April 2026, she wrote that from the very day she lost the ability to become a mother naturally, she became desperate for a child. Speaking of the difficult and painful process of retrieving her own eggs amid the crisis of the coronavirus pandemic, she said that at that time, lying on the sofa, she would think of adopting one day and the very next day become restless to find a surrogate. Some days she felt she would be fine even without a child, and then the very next day she felt that without a child her whole life was a failure.
After travelling this long and uncertain road, Dunham said in an interview given to The Times in June 2025 that she and her husband Luis Felber were in the process of growing their family in a new way. However, for reasons of safety and personal privacy, she did not agree to give details at the time. She only said she would speak about it at an appropriate time after safely meeting the child.
Even earlier, in 2020, the star had described her own emotional journey in an article in Harper’s Magazine. She wrote that being able to move forward after accepting the hard truth that she would never be able to conceive herself is perhaps the greatest qualification for being a parent to a child. At last she has realised that many valuable experiences worth teaching a new human being have now accumulated in her store.
