Forest guards have recovered various items, including 14 mobile phones, from a fishing hut built by forest robbers in a drive in the Nilbaria area of the Sharankhola range of the Sundarbans. The drive was conducted on Sunday afternoon.
Forest guards led by Forester Md Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Katka Forest Station of the Sharankhola range under the Sundarbans East Division in Bagerhat, spotted an abandoned fishing hut while patrolling the Nilbaria area on foot. Sensing the presence of the forest guards, the forest robbers who were there fled towards the deep forest.
Later, searching the hut, the forest guards recovered 14 mobile phone sets without SIM cards and various supplies including rice, lentils, oil, onions, garlic and salt. At the end of the drive, the hut built by the forest robbers was destroyed.
Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, divisional forest officer (DFO) of the Sundarbans East Division in Bagerhat, confirmed the matter at night. He said it was not possible to detain anyone as the forest robbers had already fled after sensing the presence of the forest guards.
Forest Department officials said that although an extensive search was later carried out at the spot and in the surrounding areas, none of the forest robbers was found.
