A by-election will be held on 12 November to the reserved women’s seat declared vacant following the resignation of Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti. The Election Commission (EC) has announced the schedule for the polls.
The voting schedule was made public through a notification issued on Monday and signed by Akhtar Ahmed, senior secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat.
According to the schedule, aspiring candidates must submit their nomination papers to the returning officer by 26 October. The EC will scrutinise the nomination papers the following day, 27 October. Appeals against scrutiny decisions can be filed on 28 October, and those appeals will be disposed of the next day (29 October).
Candidacies can be withdrawn until 1 November. Symbols will be allocated to candidates the following day (2 November). Once all stages are complete, voting for the reserved seat will begin at 8am on 12 November and continue until 4pm.
Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti submitted her resignation letter to the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad on 1 October, following a party decision over the attack and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur in the capital. The Parliament Secretariat then declared the seat vacant and informed the Election Commission about filling it. In line with that, the EC has now issued the schedule for the by-election to the seat.
