For the first time among the nuclear power plants built by state nuclear energy corporation ‘Rosatom’ outside Russia, an ‘Operator Information Support System’ (OISS) is being implemented at Rooppur. At the same time, work on installing the automated process control system (APCS) in the first and second units of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has been successfully completed.
This information was given in a press release sent by Rosatom’s media wing on Tuesday (13 October). This modern technology will help operate the power plant safely and efficiently and help operators take quick decisions in emergencies.
According to the release, this automated control system supplied by Rosatom’s Automated Control Systems (RASU) has around 20,000 pieces of equipment under 43 systems. With their help, more than seven thousand parameters of various processes of the plant, including reactor stability, will be kept under constant monitoring, which will greatly increase the safety, reliability and efficiency of the plant’s operations.
Dr Zayedul Hasan, managing director of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited, said one of the most important parts of this system is the Operator Information Support System (OISS), which RASU developed with the help of the power unit’s ‘digital twin’ technology. It has already been connected to the first unit and is playing a positive role in start-up operations. The same technology will be implemented in phases in the second unit too.
It is learnt that the OISS can detect any potential deviation in advance by analysing data from 360 process-related systems. It has more than 80 guidelines to indicate immediate actions in emergencies. By presenting complex information in an easy-to-understand way, it will help operators take quick and correct decisions.
On the progress of the project, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is not only the largest project of cooperation between Russia and Bangladesh but also a leading example in the use of modern automation and control technology. Among the plants built by Rosatom abroad, OISS has been added first in Bangladesh. He further said the system will reduce both the response time in emergencies and operating costs.
Notably, this nuclear power plant is being built at Rooppur in Pabna with two VVER-1200 reactors of Generation 3+ (three plus) technology. Rosatom’s engineering division ‘Atomstroyexport’ is implementing the project.
