The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has extended the contract of World Cup-winning coach Luis de la Fuente until 2032.
In a statement, the RFEF said, ‘The federation has signed a new contract with Luis de la Fuente. He will remain in charge of the national team until 2032. During this period he will have three major tournaments — the two European Championships of 2028 and 2032 and the 2030 World Cup.’
De la Fuente, 65, took charge as Spain coach in December 2022, replacing Luis Enrique. Since then, Spain have won the 2023 UEFA Nations League, Euro 2024 and, in July this year, the FIFA World Cup under him.
The 2025 Nations League is the only one De la Fuente could not win. In the final of that edition, Spain lost 5-3 to Portugal in the tie-breaker after a 2-2 draw.
Since he took charge in 2022, Spain have played 50 matches under De la Fuente, winning 38, drawing 10 and losing 2. The team are unbeaten for 38 matches, the highest in their history in international football.
Before taking charge of the senior team, De la Fuente worked with various Spanish youth teams for a decade.
Rafael Louzan, chairman of the board of directors of the Spanish Football Federation, said, ‘We are talking about the most successful head coach in the history of the national team. After spending 14 years with us, Luis de la Fuente deserves a long-term contract at the RFEF.’
After winning the World Cup last July, Spain will play their first competitive match in the Nations League on 26 September. The Spaniards will begin their campaign with a match against England in Group 3 in London. Three days later, on 29 September, they will face Croatia in Seville.
Spain will play the Czech Republic in Oviedo on 3 October. Three days after that, the team will take the field against Croatia again.
