Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan has called on officials of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) to implement development projects by ensuring maximum use of the country’s limited resources.
Addressing LGED’s executive and assistant engineers, he said Bangladesh is a small country, yet a huge number of people live here. So work has to be done keeping the limitation of resources in mind. If a piece of work needs Tk 10 crore, there must be an effort to see how it can be done for Tk 7 or 8 crore.
He said this on Saturday at a discussion meeting on the organisation’s development activities held in the auditorium of the LGED Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital.
Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan said the key to the development of rural infrastructure and localities across the country is in the hands of the around 5,600 officials present in this auditorium. But merely having the key in hand will not do; it has to be turned in the right direction. The country will advance if work is done properly, and development will stall with wrong decisions.
He advised the officials to remain aware of their own important responsibility. He reminded them that around 35 years ago the then prime minister Khaleda Zia had taken the initiative to establish LGED and had realised its importance.
Moyeen Khan said everyone knows how waste took place in the past 17 years and through whom it took place. Protecting the people’s resources and using them properly is the duty of those in responsible positions. Proper use of state resources must be ensured as part of the responsibility given by the people.
Highlighting the importance of ‘motivation’ in work, he said that if there is the belief that ‘I am working to serve the people’, it is possible to carry out one’s responsibility properly as well.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hasan, LGED Chief Engineer Md Belal Hossain and other officials concerned were present at the meeting.
