With almost two years of school fees, exam fees and registration fees left unpaid, Taslim Ahmed Shuvo had been unsure whether he would even be able to sit for his SSC examination. The dues had built up because of his family’s financial hardship. Yet the SSC candidate had kept studying in the hope that poverty would not cut his education short and that his dream would one day come true. In the end, the ABG (Anvir Bashundhara Group) Foundation has come forward with support so that his education does not come to a halt.
Shuvo’s family lives in Pajulia village in Gazipur. The household runs mainly on what his father earns through hard work. To make a living, he buys milk from local dairy farms and sells it at the market; on top of that, he works on other people’s farmland to cover household expenses. On this limited income, paying for his son’s education after meeting the family’s daily needs had become difficult for him.
Despite the family’s struggles, Shuvo kept trying to continue his studies. For the past four years he has been receiving Tk 1,000 a month under the Bashundhara Shuvosangho scholarship. The money has been a major source of support in meeting his education costs.
To prepare well for the SSC, Shuvo enrolled in coaching. After that, the financial pressure on the family grew further. Although the scholarship money covered the monthly coaching fee, the family could not raise the money for the accumulated school dues, the exam fee and the SSC registration fee. As a result, whether he would be able to take the exam at all became a serious question.
After learning of the situation, the ABG Foundation came forward to make sure Shuvo’s studies could continue without interruption. Last Sunday, at Mofiz Uddin Khan High School in Chapulia under Gazipur city, Shuvo was given a grant to pay nearly two years of outstanding tuition fees, the exam fee, the SSC registration fee and other dues.
At the event, the ABG Foundation’s grant cheque was handed over by Lutfor Rahman, staff photojournalist of Kaler Kantho. It was received by the school’s headmistress Asma Akter, student Taslim Ahmed Shuvo and his mother Nasima Begum.
According to headmistress Asma Akter, poor and meritorious students in Gazipur and other parts of the country are able to continue their education with the help of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho scholarship. She said that because of this support, students are getting the chance to move ahead with their studies even in adverse circumstances. She also described the ABG Foundation’s initiative as praiseworthy. In her view, such humanitarian work can play a major role in helping the country’s meritorious students move forward.
Shuvo’s mother, Nasima Begum, expressed her gratitude on receiving the support. She thanked the ABG Foundation as well as everyone involved in the Bashundhara Shuvosangho scholarship programme.
With the ABG Foundation’s help, Shuvo now has the chance to overcome the obstacle that had threatened to stop his education midway for lack of money. Initiatives that stand by meritorious students like him from struggling families bring hope on two fronts — continuing their studies and fulfilling their dreams for the future.
Background
Several other instances of support from the ABG Foundation have been reported recently. The foundation gave a total of Tk 20 lakh for the treatment of two ailing journalists working on the Secretariat beat and for the families of two deceased journalists — Risingbd reported this in September 2026. According to a Samakal report from the same month, the cheques were handed over at the annual general meeting of the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the BIAM Multipurpose Hall in New Eskaton, Dhaka.
District angle
Bashundhara Shuvosangho has an active district unit in Gazipur. According to a Bangladesh Pratidin report of 10 November 2025, the organisation ran a blood-group testing campaign for students in the district; at the time, district unit president Musafir Imran said similar initiatives would be taken on a larger scale in future.
At a glance
Bashundhara Shuvosangho provides monthly scholarships to meritorious students from low-income families with the support of Bashundhara Group. According to a Bangladesh Pratidin report of 3 May 2025, 120 students of Jagannath University receive the scholarship every month; by the same newspaper’s count on 23 August 2025, more than 600 Dhaka University students receive it monthly. Besides scholarships, the organisation also runs Shuvosangho schools — Bangladesh Pratidin reported on 1 January 2026 that one such school in Birganj, Dinajpur, provides education completely free of charge with Bashundhara Group’s support.
