Police have recovered the body of an unidentified middle-aged woman, wrapped in a blanket and stuffed into a sack, from a beel in Matlab Municipality of Matlab Dakshin upazila in Chandpur. Her identity could not be established immediately as her face was disfigured.
The body was recovered from the beel beside Jor Bridge in Charmukundi village of Ward No 4 of the municipality around 10am on Tuesday (13 October).
According to police and local sources, a farmer of Charmukundi village who went to clear water hyacinth from his land in the beel in the morning saw something like a blanket-wrapped sack floating. Becoming suspicious, he told other residents. Locals then informed the police, and a team from Matlab Dakshin Police Station went to the spot and recovered the body.
Seeing the condition at the scene, locals suspect that the woman was killed somewhere else a few days ago and her body was put in a sack and dumped in the beel to make it disappear.
Matlab Dakshin Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman Manik said that on receiving the information, police recovered the floating body of the unidentified woman. The body is being sent to the morgue of the 250-bed Chandpur General Hospital for a post-mortem.
The OC further said police and the PBI are working to identify the victim and find clues to the killing. An unnatural death case and further legal steps over the incident are being processed at the police station.
