Malaysian cricketer Virandeep Singh has expressed disappointment after the Asian Games quarter-final match against Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain.
The match could not even be started on Tuesday because of continuous rain at the Zhejiang University of Technology Cricket Field. Under the tournament rules, Bangladesh advanced directly to the semi-final as the higher-seeded team, while Malaysia had to bow out of the Asian Games without playing a match.
Expressing his disappointment over the incident on social media, Virandeep wrote that he was wrapped in a towel when he received the news that the quarter-final against Bangladesh had been called off. He expressed sorrow at not getting the chance to take the field.
He further wrote that he had waited three years for the chance to play against a Test-playing team again, but perhaps it was not meant to be.
Earlier, at the 2022 Asian Games too, Malaysia had come very close to making history while playing against Bangladesh. This time as well, the team did not get the chance to take the field against Bangladesh.
With the match abandoned due to rain, Bangladesh will face Pakistan in the semi-final on Friday. Malaysia, on the other hand, exited Asian Games cricket without playing a single match.
