A demo class has been added to the teacher recruitment policy of Rajshahi University (RU). Alongside this, scope has been kept for applying for teaching posts even without being among the first seven in the merit order in master’s. The decision was taken at the university’s 549th syndicate meeting. Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr Abdul Alim confirmed the matter on Saturday.
He said the earlier policy remains in force for teacher recruitment; only the demo class has been added. Besides, a candidate who stood first in honours will be able to apply even if he or she is not in merit positions 1 to 7 in master’s. However, having a CGPA of 3.5 in both honours and master’s is mandatory.
Earlier, the teacher recruitment policy had been changed in 2022. In that, the condition was set that to become a teacher a candidate must have a minimum CGPA of 3.5 in honours and master’s and be within merit positions 1 to 7. There was a requirement for candidates from the science group to have a combined GPA of at least 9 in SSC and HSC, and for candidates from the humanities and commerce groups at least 8.5.
There was also a condition of giving priority to candidates having a thesis and research publications, alongside having a GPA of 4 in any one examination.
Syndicate sources said the demo class has been added to the policy with the aim of recruiting skilled and qualified teachers. At the final stage, the candidate will have to take a demo class on a specific topic before the board panel, where the teachers of the board themselves will be in the role of students. After that, one person will be selected upon final assessment. In the case of a candidate who stood first in honours, the condition of being within 1 to 7 in master’s has been relaxed somewhat; only first-position holders will get this opportunity.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Faridul Islam said that in the new policy, importance has been given to demonstration alongside the candidate’s academic results, publications and degrees. Because a good student does not necessarily mean a good teacher. Making students understand easily, presentation skills and understanding the classroom environment are also important. That is the reason for this addition, so that selecting qualified and skilled manpower overall becomes easier.
