The cabinet has congratulated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on delivering a speech as the prime minister of Bangladesh at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The congratulatory resolution adopted by the cabinet has now been published in the form of a gazette.
An extraordinary gazette on the matter was issued by the Cabinet Division on Thursday (1 October).
The gazette says Prime Minister Tarique Rahman spoke at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly on 24 September. It has been described as a specially prestigious and historic event for Bangladesh.
It further says that earlier the prime minister’s father, martyred president Ziaur Rahman, had spoken at the 11th special session of the UN General Assembly on 26 August 1980.
His mother, former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, spoke at the 48th session of the UN General Assembly on 1 October 1996.
The gazette has termed the fact of three members of the same family representing their own country at the UN General Assembly a rare and unique historic event.
According to the gazette, the prime minister took part in a total of 23 international programmes during the four-day visit. Besides delivering a speech at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, he spoke at seven high-level meetings.
In addition, he held bilateral meetings with 11 countries and meetings with top officials of 10 international organisations, including the United Nations.
The cabinet’s congratulatory resolution says Bangladesh’s participation in the UN General Assembly under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has presented the country’s commitments and expectations on the global stage and played an important role in expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
Against this backdrop, the resolution was adopted at the cabinet meeting held on 28 September, extending sincere congratulations to the Bangladesh delegation led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The gazette, signed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani by order of the president, says the congratulatory resolution adopted at the cabinet meeting is published for the information of the general public.
