Law and order and political stability are essential if foreign investment is to be brought in, Syed Ershad Ahmed, former president of the American chamber AmCham, has said.
He said, ‘I would say the investment climate is not favourable at all. Law and order and political stability must be brought first. If you threaten a movement again, what will happen to the economy? Let the economy stand first. Everyone should together keep the economy afloat. Let everything remain normal. Fix the economy first, then fight and feud as much as you like. If the economy is not fixed, what will be gained by doing all this?’
Syed Ershad Ahmed said this yesterday while analysing the World Bank’s report. In his view, if there is no business, from whom will the government collect tax? So the government has to make plans with a cool head. Investors must be assured that everything is running smoothly, that everything is normal. In particular, to attract foreign investment, infrastructure must be kept in order and the supply of power and energy must be kept normal. Ports must be kept functional so that competitiveness increases.
He further said foreign investment does not only bring capital; it increases technology, modern management, skills and employment. These must be fixed before anything else.
