Professor Dr Sheikh Shariful Alam, vice-chancellor of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), has returned to the Chattogram Circuit House after two days of treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital. He was discharged from the hospital at around 12:30pm on Thursday (15 October), after which he went to the circuit house.
After being appointed as the new vice-chancellor, Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam had earlier run the university’s activities from the circuit house for several days in the face of a student movement on the campus. On 12 October, he entered the CUET campus in the morning and went to his office in Administrative Building-2. Later, when protesting students padlocked the gate of the building, he was confined there.
After remaining confined for about 30 hours, he was rescued at around 6:00pm on 13 October with the help of Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia and Superintendent of Police Md Masud Alam. He was then admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital because of illness, and after remaining under treatment and observation there, he went back to the circuit house on Thursday.
A student movement has been going on since 22 September centring the appointment of the CUET vice-chancellor. Students began a complete shutdown programme demanding the reinstatement of former vice-chancellor Professor Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem and the cancellation of the appointment of the new vice-chancellor, Sheikh Shariful Alam. A section of teachers, officers and employees later joined the movement. The deadlock has still not ended.
