A court has sentenced Chattogram BNP leader Md Shafiqul Islam to one year and four months in prison in a fraud case filed by Rupali Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited. He was also fined Tk 10,000, in default of which he will serve another month in jail. Shafiqul was absconding when the verdict was delivered.
The court of Chattogram Second Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Abul Monsur delivered the verdict today (Tuesday). It also ordered a conviction warrant to be issued against Shafiqul Islam.
Shafiqul Islam, 47, is joint convener of the Lalkhan Bazar ward BNP in Chattogram city. His village home is in Raozan upazila. He lives on Chanmari Road in the Lalkhan Bazar area under the city’s Khulshi police station.
Additional public prosecutor and the plaintiff’s lawyer Md Mainul Hossain Bhuiyan Manik confirmed the matter. ‘As the charge brought against the accused under section 420 of the Penal Code was proved, the court found him guilty and delivered this verdict,’ he told Ajker Patrika.
Md Alamgir filed the case with a Chattogram court in 2025 on behalf of Rupali Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited, accusing Shafiqul of embezzling Tk 1 lakh through fraud. Shafiqul Islam was the only accused in the case.
According to the case statement, Shafiqul took a loan of Tk 1 lakh from the society on 11 November 2020 on the strength of a long acquaintance. When he failed to repay the money for a long time, the society pressed him to pay.
According to the statement, on 14 July 2025 Shafiqul gave the society a cheque for Tk 1 lakh drawn on Uttara Bank Limited. The cheque bounced after it was deposited with the bank.
The case alleges that when people from the society tried to reach him, Shafiqul cut off contact. When they later spoke, he refused to pay the money owed and is also alleged to have threatened to kill the plaintiffs. The society then filed the fraud case against him.
