Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Mia Golam Parwar has raised questions by recalling the events of October 2006. He said, ‘Your Sramik Dal had a meeting here on the 28th; why did you move it away on the night of the 27th? It is clear there was a line inside. Even today that question has not been settled before the nation.’
He said this at a protest rally at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram mosque in the capital on Wednesday. The rally and procession were organised ‘demanding justice for the logi-boitha (poles and oars) rampage and killings of the fascist Awami League on 28 October 2006’.
The Jamaat leader further asked, ‘Why could the four-party alliance meeting not be held in one place that day? Why could the home minister not be reached by telephone? Why has the case withdrawn by Hasina still not been revived?’
Addressing the government, Mia Golam Parwar said, ‘I will tell this government: if you are truly against fascism, then search the papers and revive the Paltan killings case. In the case in which Hasina is being tried at the tribunal, arrest Menon, Inu, Hasina, along with JSD, BASAD, the leftists and the likes of Bappaditya Basu, who danced on dead bodies, and bring them to face punishment. Then we will understand that you truly call the Awami League fascist.’
He alleged that Jamaat had filed a case over the Paltan incident, but the Awami League withdrew it after coming to power in 2009. He said, ‘When we later went to collect documents to follow up the case in court, we found that not only had the case been withdrawn after the charge sheet was submitted, but all the documents of the case had been made to disappear by using the power of the government.’
In the words of the Jamaat secretary general, ‘The BNP was in power that day; the home minister did not pick up the phone, neither police nor army came here that day. Yet you held your meeting comfortably in Naya Paltan. This shows there was a secret rapport.’
Party executive council member Shafiqul Islam Masud, Dhaka-5 MP Md Kamal Hossain and Sadik Kayem, Jamaat’s nominated mayoral candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation, among many others, also spoke at the rally. After the rally, Jamaat leaders and activists brought out a protest procession from there, which ended at the Matsya Bhaban intersection after going round the Paltan intersection and the National Press Club.
