Bangladesh have lost 5-0 to South Korea in their first match of Pool ‘A’ in the Asian Games men’s hockey. The match was held at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan on Friday.
Bangladesh kept their goalpost intact for the first 20 minutes. But after that, Roman Sarkar and his teammates could no longer withstand one attack after another from the strong Korean side.
South Korea took control of the match by scoring two goals within a few seconds of each other in the 21st minute, in the second quarter. They first went ahead through a field goal by Bae Sung-min, and Oh Seyong doubled the lead in the same minute. Bangladesh went into the break trailing 2-0.
Korea stepped up the pressure further in the third quarter. A field goal by Lee Gangsan in the 30th minute made the score 3-0. Two minutes later, Korea got their fourth goal through Yang Jihun’s strike from a penalty corner.
In the final quarter, Bangladesh tried to reduce the margin but could not break through the Korean defence. Instead, the margin of defeat grew further with a field goal by Sim Jaewon in the 58th minute.
In the end, Bangladesh left the field with a 5-0 defeat. Four of Korea’s five goals came from field goals, the other from a penalty corner.
Bangladesh will play their next match against Japan on 22 September.
