Dancer Arthi Ahmed, who received the Ekushey Padak this year, will appear in Atoshi’s new music video. The song is called ‘Ongko Na Janar Gaan’ (The song of not knowing maths). Exactly a year earlier, last October, Atoshi’s solo song ‘Olpo Ektu Jiboner Gaan’ was released on World Breast Cancer Day; actress Mousumi Hamid was the model in that video.
Asked why she got involved, Arthi Ahmed said, ‘I really liked Atoshi’s previous song. When she sent me the new song, I couldn’t say no. I believe everyone will like this song of Atoshi’s too.’
Arthi also described the shoot: ‘There is not much dancing in the song. Mostly I stood in front of the camera and did whatever felt right to me. Rather than preparing and dancing that way, I tried to feel the song as I listened. All in all, working on it was a completely different experience. When we perform on stage, we give a lot of expression. Here the director wanted very little expression. Balancing that was a bit of a struggle. But the whole team was wonderful, so chatting away, I didn’t notice when the work was done.’
Performing in music videos is not new for Arthi; she has done so several times before. She said she takes the work seriously if she finds a good story that suits the song. But she has no separate plans around music videos. All her plans revolve around dance, and she has no wish to become a regular in any other medium.
The lyrics and tune of ‘Ongko Na Janar Gaan’ are by Udayan Rajib. The music arrangement, mixing and mastering are by musician Autumnal Moon. In Atoshi’s words, the lyrics tell the story of the wonder, loneliness and emotion of someone newly in love. Their thoughts about a loved one, walking alone on the city’s empty streets, matching their own feelings with nature — this is how the lyrics unfold. In one place the lyricist compares himself to a lonely tree; elsewhere he conveys restlessness of the heart through the image of a bulbul flying out of the ribcage.
Atoshi added that here the feeling of love comes through more in various poetic metaphors than in direct statement. The song’s main hint is towards that feeling — the reckoning of love that never adds up, the emotion that cannot be bound by any simple equation.
The song will be released on Atoshi’s YouTube channel on 24 October. It will also be available on popular local and international digital platforms, including Spotify and iTunes.
