An initiative has been taken to start the first-year examinations of the 2025-26 academic year in 19 departments of Cumilla University (CoU) within 15 days in order to restore academic discipline, hold examinations and publish results on schedule, and eliminate session jam.
As part of this, all departments have been instructed to start examinations between 1 and 15 October. The university’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Amzad Hossain Sarker confirmed the matter on Thursday (1 October) afternoon.
University sources said the departments of Mass Communication and Journalism, Anthropology, English, Pharmacy, Marketing, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Management Studies, and Finance and Banking have already started examinations. The office of the controller of examinations said the remaining departments will also start examinations by 15 October.
It was learnt that class activities of the 2025-26 academic year began on 12 April. There is an instruction to complete first-year examinations within six months of the start of class activities. However, as some students of a few departments were admitted a month later because of migration, there was a delay in completing the classes of those departments. Hence this initiative is to ensure examinations and publication of results on schedule according to the academic calendar.
Associate Professor Dr Jannatul Ferdous, head of the Department of Pharmacy, said that according to the academic calendar, their department had planned to finish classes in early November; later, as per the administration’s instruction, examinations began from 1 October. Although the start of examinations in a few departments was delayed because of migration, it was possible to run activities on schedule in their department as no student came in the last migration.
She said the administration is taking the activities forward together to bring continuity to holding examinations and publishing results.
The university’s Controller of Examinations Mohammad Nurul Karim Chowdhury said strict monitoring is beginning from the first year of the 2025-26 academic year to restore discipline in academic activities, and a decision has been taken to start the first-year examinations of 19 departments between 1 and 15 October.
He said the entire process, including preparing the examination schedule, starting examinations, evaluating scripts and publishing results, will be monitored through reports to the vice-chancellor and the pro-vice-chancellor.
The controller of examinations further said teachers have been requested to submit examination scripts to the department within 10 days if possible and to publish results within eight weeks. If results cannot be submitted on schedule without a justifiable reason, various punitive measures, including deduction of the salary of the teacher concerned, will be taken.
He said the main goal is to take the 2025-26 academic year as a pilot project, identify where session jam is being created and where it is being obstructed, and find a way to eliminate session jam in the long term.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Amzad Hossain Sarker said the first-year examinations of the 20th batch of 19 departments are beginning simultaneously. Examinations of eight departments began on 1 October and the examinations of the remaining departments will also begin by 15 October.
He said classes and examinations have been started simultaneously so that no department of this session falls behind. With this, students of all departments of this batch will be able to complete graduation within a gap of one or two months.
On the session jam of other batches, the pro-vice-chancellor said a few departments are currently lagging behind in publishing results. The teachers of these departments have been called and instructed to finish academic activities quickly by taking extra classes and publish the results. Although the initiative has begun with students of the 2025-26 academic year, this policy will be implemented in other academic years as well in phases.
