BNP Vice Chairman and Noakhali-3 (Begumganj) lawmaker Barkat Ullah Bulu has described the distribution of more than one lakh cards under various social safety net programmes, including family cards and farmer cards, as a milestone in the history of Bangladesh.
He said this after distributing family and farmer cards at the Begumganj upazila meeting room in Noakhali on Thursday (1 October) afternoon. At the same time, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman joined virtually from Fulgazi in Feni and inaugurated the card distribution activities in different areas of the country.
Bulu said more than one lakh cards have been given, counting family and farmer cards together with various allowances for imams and muezzins of mosques and priests of temples. He claimed that through this initiative the way will be paved for delivering government services and facilities to ordinary people more easily.
He said an initiative has been taken to ensure transparency and accountability in order to deliver the benefits of social safety net and public welfare programmes to the real beneficiaries. In the card-based system, besides making it easier to store and verify beneficiaries’ information, scope will be created to reduce irregularities and the dominance of middlemen in the distribution of government assistance.
He further said these programmes will play a role in ensuring ordinary people’s rightful entitlements and government assistance, as well as in improving living standards and ensuring social security.
At the time, he called on everyone to come forward to keep society free of drugs and terrorism, and also spoke of building social resistance against the misinterpretation of religion.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, district Superintendent of Police NM Nasiruddin, Begumganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kayesur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station Shamsuzzaman, district BNP member Shamima Barkat Lucky and officials of the upazila administration were present at the event.
In addition, BNP convener Kamakhya Chandra Das, municipal BNP convener Zahir Uddin Harun and leaders and activists of the party’s affiliated and associate organisations were present.
