Photo: Collected
Pronunciation: Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, Subhanallahil Azim.
Meaning: Allah is pure and great, and all praise is His. Pure and great is that Allah, who is the possessor of the highest honour.
Significance
The phrase ‘Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi’ means – I declare the purity of Allah along with His praise.
Two fundamental matters come out in this zikr. First, by saying ‘Subhanallah’, the purity of Allah and His being free from all kinds of defects are acknowledged. Second, by saying ‘wa bihamdihi’, gratitude and praise are expressed to Him.
The special virtue of this zikr has been mentioned in the hadith.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, ‘Whoever recites “Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi” 100 times every day, his sins will be forgiven even if they are more than the foam of the sea.’ (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6405)
It is narrated in another hadith, ‘The words most beloved to Allah are “Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi”.’ (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2137)
Another hadith says, ‘Whoever says “Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi”, a tree is planted for him in Jannah.’ (Jami Tirmizi, Hadith: 3464)
It is further narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, ‘Whoever says “Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi” three times every morning and evening will remain protected from all kinds of danger.’ (Sunan Tirmizi, Hadith: 3388)
